Renewable energies are typical for the region.

Ideal landscape settings with the usual high wind characteristics for the region, as well as the Elbe location and its direct connection to the North Sea are immense benefits of that region for industries such as the complex logistics of the on- and offshore wind farms.

Companies located in the Hamburg Metropolitan Region include wind-turbine-manufacturers, project developers of biogas and solar plants, energy providers and numerous technical and other services providers. The numerous colleges, universities and private research institutions make this an outstanding and well-positioned research community. The infrastructure needed by these wind energy providers is provided by the offshore bases that have been developed over the course of the past few years in Brunsbüttel and Cuxhaven.

The Lower Elbe region further offers outstanding potential for the realization of a future-oriented hydrogen energy economy and the continued development of the low-emission LNG marine fuel (liquefied natural gas).
